Originally a small farming community, Germantown was created in 1963 by merging the hamlets of Dheinsville, Rockfield, Goldenthal, Willow Creek, Kuhburg, and Meeker Hill. Many German immigrants, especially from Prussia, Pommern, Rheinland, Hessen, and Bavaria, settled in the area, hence the name they chose.
The Washington County village lies directly northwest of Milwaukee. It has grown into much more than a simple suburb of the metropolitan city. The top employers in the community are Systems Services – which designs and manufactures loading dock equipment, TCI, Jas, and Heim Manufacturing. No need to drive very far to go to work!
Today, Germantown stretches across 36 miles and is inhabited by more than 20,000 people, and of the 7766 households, 35% have children under age 18. The school district boasts of a 97.5% graduation rate. In July of 2007, Money Magazine ranked Germantown 30th out of the 100 most attractive places to live in the United States.
Best of all, the Park and Rec Department strive to enhance the quality of life for every resident in Germantown. They provide a variety of special events and recreational programs for children and families and maintain 400 acres of parkland and facilities. Activities such as movies and concerts in the Park, youth sports leagues, fitness programs, games, and family fun are open to everyone, young and old, year-round. The parks contain ball fields, picnic areas, rivers, woods, and lots of open space to fly kites, play tag, or relax.
The jewel of the community’s crown, the Germantown Performing Arts Center (GPAC), opened in 1994. There is an 868-seat theater, a small studio theater, and two outdoor spaces. GPAC presents performing artists in various genres, offers educational outreach classes, and has many visual arts exhibits throughout the year.
