Waukesha Contemporary Kitchen

Before

The challenge of this project was to incorporate the needs of the client, with respect to functionality and aesthetics. The customer dreamed of a kitchen that functioned better in regard to workspace, storage, and preparation area that has dual functions as it flows into a large island that is conducive to entertaining. The new space should have a transitional look to seamlessly blend the original style of the house with the homeowner’s increasingly modern tastes.

We addressed the client’s concerns by improving the layout and removing the peninsula, which cut the room in half. The large new island provides much needed storage and prep space with seating for six people which allows guests to gather around the hub of the house. The design of the island mimics the angled windows and patio door, which creates visual interest. The island cabinetry in Smokey Taupe provides contrast with the lighter Perfect Greige of the perimeter cabinets. The Bianco Iran granite compliments the tones of the cabinets, darker hues of the backsplash, and the Brizo, Vuelo faucet in stainless steel and cocoa bronze finish. The most exciting elements of the granite were predominately displayed on the island. Additional can lights were installed to the perimeter of the kitchen, highlighting the task areas. Hubbardton Forge pendant lights and dining area light fixture above the island make a statement; the shape of the fixtures mimics the movement in the granite and also compliments the pattern in the cabinet hardware. We supplemented the light over the island with 4” recessed cans to provide sufficient task lighting for the prep areas. The laminate flooring in the existing kitchen was not holding up to the client’s three large dogs. We installed durable Adura flooring from the Dockside collection, in Driftwood. The new flooring has a hand scraped texture, minimizing the appearance of dirt and standing up to the dog’s claws. The Driftwood color of the flooring has grey and taupe undertones, to complement the existing woodwork throughout the home.
