3 Types of Flooring You Should Know About

by | Mar 20, 2019 | Remodeling | 0 comments

When it comes to renovating your bathroom or kitchen, choosing the flooring you want can be one of the hardest and most important decisions to make. It must be aesthetically pleasing but since it’s in a kitchen or bathroom, it must be functional. There are pros and cons to each type of flooring. Here are the three most popular flooring options to consider for your next renovation project.

Luxury Vinyl Plank or Luxury Vinyl Tile

Pros: Great for a conscious budget, most are waterproof, pet-friendly, lots of different finishes and installations, softer/warmer surface than tile, and can imitate wood or tile.

Cons: Pattern is printed on the surface of the product, can scratch easily if it doesn’t have a good quality wear layer*, can require floor leveling or additional subfloor prep

*The wear layer is the top surface coating which provides the durability, stain, and scratch-resistance of vinyl flooring. If you have pets or kids a thicker wear layer is recommended.

Pros: Eco-friendly option, low maintenance, natural beauty, luxurious look.

Cons: Not waterproof, can scratch and dent, not pet-friendly, stricter environmental conditions, requires the use of a humidifier to maintain a steady environment throughout the year

Hardwood is a beautiful flooring option that looks great no matter how you decorate your home. However, keep in the mind these floors can be damaged by moisture in the environment so you should own a humidifier to keep your floors in pristine condition.

Pros: Extremely durable, a huge variety of finishes/sizes/styles, endless design possibilities, some styles imitate hardwood but without the maintenance, can install in-floor heat to give the tile a warmer feel.

Cons: Hard surface, maintenance with grout and caulk if it is not sealed, large variance in price, more expensive installation (labor and materials.)

Tile is great for bathrooms and kitchens because it is durable and waterproof. The downside is that it is often more expensive to install. Tile can also be cold to the touch. To combat this, you may want to consider installing in-floor heat underneath your tile at the time of installation.
